1. The W Trek Difficulty

The W Trek is the park's most popular and accessible circuit, earning its name from the distinctive "W" shape it traces across the magnificent Paine Massif.
In terms of trekking difficulty, the W Trek is the easiest (medium difficulty) and shortest Torres del Paine route, spanning approximately 80 kilometres. You complete it in five days while immersing yourself in the park's diverse landscapes and iconic sights.
While you can hike this trail with a moderate fitness level, understand that it features several steep ascents and descents, with a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 3,000 metres.

The most strenuous sections include the trek to the Base Torres viewpoint, the French Valley, and the Grey Glacier-Pehoé Lake leg, each demanding between 8 and 10 hours of hiking. Also, the trek is unsupported - meaning you don't have porters to carry your gear. As such, you want to consider what to pack for the W trek and keep everything light!
To tackle the W Trek successfully, you can train on high elevations and come adequately equipped with sturdy hiking boots, warm layers, and a reliable backpack to carry your essentials. Even better, hire a knowledgeable guide who can provide invaluable insights into the trail's nuances and enhance your overall experience.
Skyhook offers a guided Torres del Paine W-trek where our trusted local guides go with you from start to finish. But, if you know the region well, we also offer the self-guided W-Trek so you can hike at your own pace.

2. The O Circuit Difficulty

We recommend hiking the Torres del Paine O Circuit when you want the ultimate challenge. It is one of the most difficult treks in the park, mainly because of its length. And like the W trek, this trail is also unsupported; so you will carry your gear from camp to camp. It spans approximately 130 kilometres and takes eight days to complete, encircling the entire Paine Massif and traversing some of the park's most remote and rugged terrain.
The hike also takes you through the entire W Trek and ventures into the lesser-travelled Dickson and Los Perros sectors. Along the way, you'll ascend steep passes and navigate rocky terrain and icy streams - all while carrying everything you have on your O trek packing list!

With a cumulative elevation gain of over 5,000 metres, this trek requires high endurance, determination, and preparation. We recommend proper acclimatisation, appropriate gear, and a strong mental fortitude even before you go.
However, while it is a tough climb, the rewards are nothing short of extraordinary - especially the accomplishment of conquering such a demanding trek.
You can book our fully Guided O Trek in Torres del Paine and hike with guides. Alternatively, you can book the Self-Guided O Trek and hike solo and at your own pace - it'll be easier in terms of the distance you cover daily, but ensure you know the terrain and weather surprises before you book.

3. The Base Trek Difficulty

The Base Trek offers a one-day adventure that packs a punch. This 20-kilometre out-and-back trail takes you to the iconic Torres del Paine base for unobstructed views of the granite spires.
It is a moderately difficult trail with a cumulative elevation gain of 780 metres, and several steep and rocky sections that demand good fitness and proper footwear. In addition, the ever-changing Patagonian weather can add an extra layer of difficulty, with strong winds and sudden rain showers being common occurrences.
Despite the challenges, the Base Trek offers a truly unforgettable experience. As you approach the base of the towering Torres, you'll be amazed by their grandeur, with their jagged peaks piercing the sky like stone sentinels.

Acclimatisation:

If you're attempting longer treks, such as the O Circuit, it's essential to allow proper acclimatisation to the altitude and terrain. Consider incorporating shorter hikes into your itinerary before embarking on the more strenuous routes.
