Back-End Software Developer

Summary

We’re looking for someone who wants to use technology to help people explore wild mountain ranges around the world. You must be a skilled and experienced PHP developer who can improve our systems, helping our clients book courses and find inspiring routes to do on their own.

Skyhook Adventure is a fast-growing mountaineering school. Founded in 2017, we’re now the largest ice climbing provider in the world, with our client base doubling every three months since we launched.

Free mountaineering trips (e.g. ice climbing, snow holing, Everest base camp).
The option to work in our Norwegian instructor chalet during the winter.

Required Skills

  • PHP, CSS, JavaScript knowledge
  • Drupal CMS experience
  • Fluency in English

Desired Skills

  • Hill walking/mountaineering experience
  • Management potential – we’re fast growing and will be looking to expand our development team over the coming year.
  • Experience building iphone/Android apps.

Job Role

  • Improving our Drupal-based booking system and client portal. We’re adding a lot of extra functionality to help our clients interact before the trip, find all the information they need and track their progress over time as they make their way through our courses.

  • Maintaining and improving our online safety systems – instructor check-ins, client tracking with GPS transponders and others.

  • App development – co-ordinating with or managing the development of a Skyhook app

Senior Ice Climbing Instructor

Summary

We’re looking for an experienced and qualified winter mountaineering instructor (Isklatring, MIC, IFMGA or equivalent) who would like to work in the incredible ice climbing and skiing destination that is Rjukan.

Skyhook Adventure is a modern mountaineering school. We’re a collective of amazing instructors, around the world, who offer fantastic courses for our guests. We’re also fast growing and not afraid of technology. Founded in 2017, Skyhook has grown to a team of over 20 instructors and is now the largest ice climbing school in the world. We use social media to promote our courses, and our own technology to improve safety.

Required Skills

  • Isklatring, MIC, IFMGA or equivalent qualification
  • Experience of teaching ice climbing and personal snow holing
  • Fantastic customer service and client skills
  • Strong attention to good safety practices
  • Fluency in English – second languages are strongly preferable
  • Basic computer skills – uploading photos etc

Desired Skills

  • Fluency in additional languages (Norwegian, German, Dutch particularly useful)
  • Social media skills
  • Ski touring and/or ski kiting skills
  • Other winter qualifications (e.g. avalanche forecasting)

Job Role

  • Five days/week average including both instruction and ancillary work as follows.
  • Teaching predominantly on four courses:
  • Beginners ice climbing – two-day top roping courses with 12 participants and 2 instructors.
  • Multi-pitch four-day ice climbing courses – 4 participants with one instructor on single pitch days and two instructors for multi-pitch days.
  • Snow holing course – two-day course building snow shelters such as snow holes and igloos, with 12 participants and two instructors.
  • Bespoke courses.
  • Social media work – Facebook live Q&A sessions, recording ascents, working with social media influencers.
  • Providing training and mentorship to junior members of staff.
  • Inputting on continuous improvement of the courses, interaction with clients, safety and client retention.
  • Live video sessions on Facebook
