Day 1: Arrive at Rjukan Old School Hostel

Most people fly into Oslo Gardermoen in the afternoon and then drive to Rjukan in around 3 hours (when you sign up we put you in touch with the other participants through a Facebook event, to arrange car sharing).

Day 2: Ice Climbing at Ozzimosis

Leave the hostel at 9am for a full day ice climbing at a local venue. The focus is getting into the swing of it and developing good movement techniques. In the evening you will have an opportunity to enjoy a sauna and good meal with the other climbers.

Day 3: Ice Climbing at Krokan

Leave hostel for a full day of ice climbing. You will be taught some more stuff for those that want to such as; ice screw placement, building belays, moving forward. Debrief and finish will be around 15:00, in time for for last flights home from Oslo.

One of the most challenging experience ever. Thanks to our instructors Tom, Callan and Magnus, who provide us with the best equipment and safest instructions, we’ve managed to climb on ice without any hesitation.
Thank you for “injection of this virus” into my vains! :)
I hope to see you again soon for another climbing adventures!

Amazing enthusiastic instructors, helpful and constantly looking after our well-being both on the ice and after climbing. We stayed in gorgeously cosy traditional Norwegian huts on a pristine site. A weekend spent amongst beautiful scenery and in fun company, basically perfect!

Feb 2018, female solo traveler on the beginner ice climbing course. Really
Enjoyed the trip, accommodation was lovely, instructors were friendly, approachable and gave good instructions. Brilliant time!

1. Can I come by myself?

Absolutely yes - most people book alone. It can feel a bit intimidating, but your guides will do introductions when you arrive and you’ll get to know the others in no time!

2. How old do I need to be?

The minimum age for all our courses is 18.

3. Do I need to be fitter/stronger?

The hand-picked locations are all great for beginners. If you're worried, feel free to give us a call and we'll talk you through what the course involves.

4. What does the price include?

It includes accommodation, guides and all technical equipment. It excludes travel, food, appropriate clothing and winter mountaineering boots (these can be rented from the hostel if needed).

5. Do I need insurance?

Yes - please make sure you have travel insurance which includes ice climbing. Popular providers include the BMC and Snowcard.

6. What are the options for food?

The local supermarket has a broad selection, with equivalent prices to a higher-end supermarket in the UK (e.g. Waitrose).

7. What should I wear?

You can find a complete gear list in the Course PDF, which we also email to you when you sign up for the course.

8. How fit do I need to be?

A moderate level of fitness is required. Climbing experience is not required. We setup a broad range of climbs suitable for complete beginners up to expert rock climbers, and coach you accordingly to your current experience.

9. How do I get to Rjukan from the airport?

If flying, go to Oslo Gardermoen - usually most affordable with Ryan Air/Norwegian Air. Course participants typically rent a car together for the 3h drive to Rjukan. When you sign up we recommend you also join the Facebook event to arrange this. You can find the event on our Facebook page.

10. Can I stay extra nights at the hostel?

You will stay in the Rjukan Old School Hostel. You can find them on Facebook and book extra nights.

11. What happens when I arrive?

If you arrive during the day, it is likely that everyone will be out skiing or climbing. Feel free to put your feet up and make yourself a coffee before the guides come back. In the evening your guide will introduce you to the rest of the group and start your course briefing.

12. Can I arrive late at night?

Yes, no problem - just let us know when you complete your registration form.

13. How cold will it be?

Temperatures can range from - 10 to - 25 degrees Celcius. You should come prepared and ensure that you have lots of warm layers.
