Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil (1,740m)

You will be picked up at 8 pm from Marrakech Airport, or 7:30 pm in the city center, and then driven to the mountain village of Imlil. Here you can enjoy your welcome dinner, and take in the panoramic views of the High Atlas mountains. All food, accommodation and transfers are included on this trip.

Day 2: Hike to Refuge de Toubkal (3,207m)

In the morning you’ll give your main bag to the muleteers, and then hike for 3 hours to the tiny settlement of Sidi Chamharouch. Here your cooks will serve up lunch, and you can also get fresh orange juice from one of the local stools. Afterwards you continue for another 3 hours to Refuge de Toubkal, where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 3: Summit Toubkal (4,167m)

You start at around 5am, with a slow and steady pace upwards. After 2-3 hours you’ll aim to reach the summit of Mt Toubkal (4,167m) at sunrise! From here you can look down from the snowy summit, to the green Anti-Atlas mountains, and then finally the vast Sahara desert! After taking some time to enjoy the views, we’ll then head downhill for 6 hours to Imlil. Crampons (spikes for your boots) are provided if needed, and you'll be given training on how to use them, if you've never done it before.

Day 4: Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, you will be taken back to Marrakech airport for 12:00 (midday), or the city center if you prefer.

I'll admit I was a little nervous with the lack of communication in the days prior to the trip but that is literally my only issue. We were met on time and from that point everything was organised fantastically. The accommodation in all 3 locations was beyond what I expected and the food was good enough that I'm surprised I didn't put weight on despite the hike. Our guide was called Abdel - he was good fun and very knowledgeable. He made sure we moved at a good pace but never more than we could manage. The summit at 4 am in particular is an obvious highlight of the trip as you make your way up using head torches (buy a good one - mine was rubbish!). I'd recommend the trip and Skyhook massively and the company was brilliantly represented by Hussein and the Moroccan employees.

This is literally one of the best things I have ever done. The accommodation was miles better than I expected. The food, cooked fresh every meal time was amazing, and there was so much of it. Absolutely delicious. The guides, porters, cooks, hosts, there are no words. And the cherries, oh gosh.

I met some wonderful people I now call friends. I pushed myself beyond my limits. I lost my toenail, got altitude sickness and was totally overwhelmed when our group finally disbanded, but I will never forget how wonderful the whole experience was.

I cannot fault Skyhook as a company. Every aspect of the trip was so well organised that I simply cannot find a single negative thing to say. I will definitely use them again and I have already recommended them to my friends and family.

Just back from Mount Toubkal and what a fantastic trip. From start to finish the team looked after us really well. Hussein and Omar were really great guides. Lots of chats and laughs and most importantly encouragement.
Both Riads were really nice and the food was excellent. The mountain lodge is noisy but that’s what you get in these types of hostels so it wasn’t an issue.
The 2nd day of hiking is long and it’s difficult enough so you do need a good level of fitness. But the views were so worth it. Overall a fantastic experience, the trek, the people and the fantastic company. I would def recommend.

1. What is included?

Included:

  • Guides, porters and muleteers
  • Airport transfers
  • Accommodation
  • Food & purified water

Excluded:

  • International flights
  • Tips
  • Any visa fees (not needed for UK citizens)
  • Personal travel/rescue insurance

2. Do I need my own flights?

Yes. There is an airport pickup from Marrakech Airport at 8pm, on the first day of your trip. Alternatively, if you have arrived early, we recommend you spend a few hours exploring Marrakech city and then you can be picked up from the main city square (Jemaa el-Fnaa) at 7.30pm.

For return flights you will be dropped back at the airport for 12pm (midday) on the last day of your trip. You can also be dropped in Marrakech city if you would like to stay on.

3. Am I fit enough?

The summit day can be 9-12 hours (with lots of breaks) so you do need a good level of fitness. We recommend training with jogging or sport 1-2 times a week, in the run-up to your trip.

4. How old do I need to be?

The minimum age for this trek is 18, or 16 with a parent/guardian.

5. Do I need immunisations?

You can see the latest NHS advice at https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/africa/morocco.

6. What equipment do I need?

Clothing suitable for hiking in temperatures from +25C to -10C. A detailed kit list is available on your Skyhook dashboard, after you've booked.

7. Can I leave a bag at the first night's accommodation?

Yes, you can leave anything you don't need.

8. Can I explore Marrakech during my time there?

Yes! Many people choose to do this, and you can use the trip Facebook Group to arrange to meet other people from your team.

9. Do I need to carry all my stuff up the mountain?

The local guides use mules to carry your main bag, so that you can just carry a small bag with water, sun cream and waterproofs whilst trekking.

10. Are the mules treated ethically?

The muleteers have been trained by a UK-based vet on ethical treatment of the mules. They use modern harnesses and follow strict weight limits.

11. What is the accommodation like?

On the first and last nights, you'll stay in a comfortable hotel in the village of Imlil. A variety of rooms are available, but usually you will be sharing with one other person from the team (you can choose to be placed with someone of the same gender). On the middle night, you'll stay in a mountain refuge which is very basic, with dormitory style accommodation.

12. Is there internet available?

Wifi is available in the hotels on the first and last nights, however it can be unreliable given the remote location. There is no internet available in the mountain refuge, and phone signal can be poor.

13. How many people are on the trip?

Each group is typically 12 people, with a maximum of 14.
