Hike Mount Toubkal

Looking down from the summit of Toubkal, it's impossible not to be impressed by the High Atlas mountain range.

Two days ago, you will have been driving through the Saharan desert to a mud-brick village called Imlil, but today it's completely different.

You can now see the snowy peaks of the High Atlas around you, warm grasslands below and then finally the desert that you travelled through a few days ago. Occasionally you even make out the Mediterranean in the distance

5 things to know when hiking Mount Toubkal

  1. Start from Imlil rather than Marrakech. At nearly 2000m, you'll find it far easier to acclimatise to the altitude.
  2. Pack light. The ascent day is long - so pack a small rucksack with just the essentials rather than using your main bag. Don't worry - we'll send you a full packing list!
  3. Use sunscreen and drink plenty of water. There may be snow on the ground, but the sun can still be relentless.
  4. Hiking poles help enormously. They significantly increase your efficiency and chance of success (we include them for free).
  5. Enjoy the culture. The local Berber population are very friendly - you'll be given plenty of Berber Whiskey (just spiced tea with lots of sugar) whenever you stop.
Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil (1,740m)

Your guide will pick you up from the airport (8pm) and take you to the village of Imlil, at the foothills of the High Atlas Range. The team cooks will serve you up a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Hike to Refuge de Toubkal (3,207m)

Trek up to the remote mountain refuge – it’s a six hour up-hill hike which feels a little harder with the altitude. The muleteers will take your heavy bags though, so you just have to carry a small day sack, and the team of cooks will prepare lunch at the half way point.

Day 3: Summit Toubkal (4, 167m)

Today is the big day when you summit Mt Toubkal (4,167m). It's a long day out; 3-5 hours to the summit and then 5-6 hours all the way back down to Imlil, but the views are completely worth it!

Day 4: Return to Marrakech

After breakfast, you will be taken back to the airport in the morning. Alternatively you can be dropped off in the Marrakech Medina (old city) for some sightseeing.

Guide Review Team

Skyhook's Guide Review Team is responsible for checking that your local guide is up to scratch with best-practice safety, service levels and ethical treatment of local staff. All members of this team are fully qualified instructors or guides themselves.

If you are looking for a long weekend away with abit of adventure, then this is the place to go. I like to arrive early to explore the hustle and bustle of the souk's in Marrakech. It never gets old and its a great place to grab a bargain!

This is the kind of trip that you can turn up and not have to worry about anything. The guides collect you from the airport or the city, drive you to the mountains, feed you (They cater for all dietary requirements), and show you some amazing sights along the way.

I have been out on several occasions and spent some time with the lead guide Lahoucaine. He was raised in the local area and has exceptional knowledge and expertise of the Atlas Mountains. All the guides are first aid trained and carry comprehensive first aid kits. They have all undergone high altitude, mountain specific training to ensure that high safety standards are met.

One of the main things that stood out to me about Lahoucaine and his team was their passion and drive for sustainable tourism, gender equality and animal welfare. The team does alot of work behind the scenes to ensure that tourism is benefitting all aspects of the national park.
