Altitude is also an important factor to consider, with the highest point of the trail at 4200 metres. The effects of altitude sickness can vary for different individuals, but some key things to keep in mind is to take it easy and ascend slowly.

The trek requires a good level of fitness - you will be hiking for around six - seven hours each day. We recommend that you train by doing any sports or exercise (e.g. jogging) twice a week in the run-up to your trip

The trekking day very much depends on the condition of the trails, the weather and the fitness of the group but expect to walk for 6-7 hours a day.

The morning's walk usually lasts from about 8 am to 12.30 pm and allows for numerous rest and photo stops. After a post lunch siesta, we set off for the afternoon's hike – usually 2-3 hours to the camp.

While the itineraries are designed to allow for adequate acclimatization you are likely to feel the effects of altitude sickness and oxygen deprivation whilst on this trek. Please be aware that your guide may deem it unsafe for you to continue trekking at any time and arrange for you to descend to a lower altitude.

When you go above altitudes of 2,500m, you need to allow your body time to acclimatize properly. We advise that you move slowly, don’t rush and ensure you protect yourself from the weather. Ensure you stay hydrated and eat plenty to keep your energy levels up. our Guide takes oxigen tang and satellite phone.

We're proud to say that the only complaints we get about our food is that there is too much of it. Many people comment that the food they eat on the treks is the best they get whilst in Peru.
A sample menu is as follows:

  • Breakfast - Porridge, toast, butter, jam, pancakes, fruit salad, yogurt with hot chocolate, coffee and a variety of teas.
  • Snack - Every day you are provided with a snack to eat whilst trekking, this is usually something like a power bar + fruit or biscuits + fruit.
  • Lunch - Soup + a main course ranging from Lomo Saltado, Causa Rellena, Trout, Spaghetti Bolagnese etc. served with rice and garlic bread
  • Happy Hour - Every afternoon around 5pm we serve hot chocolate, tea, popcorn, biscuits, bread and jam, etc.
  • Dinner - See the main courses served at lunch.

Tipping is at your discretion, but always highly appreciated.

The best time for this trek is during Peru’s dry season, which runs from May to September. Of these months, July and August generally have the warmest temperatures and best weather. The conditions are usually good enough in April and October too, but the nights will be much colder.

This trek is both long and remote, so even during peak months there should not be much traffic on the trails.
