Canoe and wild-camping adventure down beautiful and wild River Spey.
Your guide and canoes will be waiting for you at the Old Bridge Inn in Aviemore. You will learn how to pack a canoe for a river expedition and receive a safety briefing before launching onto the moving waters of the Spey. The river here is ideal for learning and refining your paddling techniques as we leave Aviemore and the Cairngorm mountain range which dominates the skyline. Once we reach the small village of Boat of Garten, we will land on one of a number of remote wooded islands and set up our first wild-camp and cook our supper over a camp-fire.
After a hot breakfast and striking camp, we repack our craft and launch back on to the Spey and continue our descent past Grantown-on-Spey. The river gradually picks up speed and carries us through some incredibly scenic and beautiful scenery as we leave the Cairngorm mountain range behind us. Our river guides are on hand to provide coaching as our confidence levels increase. We will arrive into the Ballindalloch estate and locate a suitable river-side wild-camp and once again enjoy supper around an open fire.
Soon becoming accustomed to life on the river, we are soon launching back onto the water to continue our adventure. Today is the day everyone looks forward to and we are soon testing our new paddling skills to with a number of easy rapids and standing waves and our guide will be on hand to help guide us through on the best lines through the water. We will then negotiate the a series of rapids through Knockando before paddling on to camp on an island near Rothes.
We repack our canoes for the very final time as we set off on our last day of paddling on the Spey. The river continues to gather speed as we steer our canoes through a series of channels and islands and under some impressive bridges. The open countryside soon closes in around us with high sandstone cliffs and feels very much like paddling through a gorge before opening out as we arrive into Spey Bay. The salty air and whirling seagulls will welcome us as we reach the pebbled beach and steely waters of the North Sea. We will then be shuttled back to Aviemore, to where we started our incredible adventure.
